Irish Hillclimb Champion Simon McKinley has set his sights on a new Pan European Hillclimb masters event to be held in Luxembourg in October of 2014. The Spectacular McKinley is no stranger to European events and has a growing legion of European Fans who love his stunning style of driving; Simon regularly draws gasps of disbelief from spectators as he drifts his Lant RT2 at high speed one handed, while waving to the crowds. Details of the event have been released by The FAI World Motor Sport Council that will see individual National Hillclimb Champions battle it out for the Champion of Champions title. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded to the top three drivers but there will also be a Nations Cup that will be based on a regularity index rather than outright BHP and Speed.
The inaugural event will take place in Eschdorf, in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on the 11nd & 12th October 2014, but other Nations can apply to Host the event, the Hillclimb Commission will make available Rules & Regulations for the drivers as well as guidelines and requirements required by countries who may submit their candidature for the event.
Ireland has already hosted a WRC Rally event and given the right backing we could indeed host a Masters Hillclimb Event here; The Co Clare rounds of our championship have two iconic hills right next to each other. There’s the world renowned Corkscrew Hill and the daunting Ballyallaban Hill, both capable of hosting the event in arguably one of the most scenic parts of Ireland.
Simon McKinley is trying to put a sponsorship package together that will allow him to travel to the event, and with a little backing an Irish team could be there in 2014 challenging the best in Europe. Simon can be contacted thru Facebook.
