A Question of safety!

So here’s a fairly simple question, who do you think is the most important official at any Motorsport event? You might say the doctor or perhaps the Rescue unit. Well, they are important there’s no doubt about that. But the most important officials at any Motorsport event are Marshals, and here’s why…As far as I’m aware no Motorsport event can run without Marshals.

Hillclimbs and Sprints are very popular here in Ireland and in Europe, and looking after the safety of spectators is just one of the very important roles a Marshal has during an event. Did you know that some of the top drivers in Motorsport started out as a Marshal, and many still do Marshal at events, its their way of giving something back to their sport.

So how do I get started? Getting started as a Marshal is very easy, just find out where your local Motor club meets and go along and offer your services. Most clubs advertise in local papers, online and on radio before an event, just go along and get signed up. Clubs will also run training nights for Marshals with Motorsport Ireland before an event. And for folks who like to learn more about safety, most clubs offer First Aid courses and training in the correct use of fire extinguishers etc.

But perhaps one of the more rewarding aspects of being a Marshal is…it’s a wonderful way to make new friends, and you also get the chance to travel to many different events. Did you know that the Irish Hillclimb & Sprint championship visits some of the most spectacular locations in Ireland and the clubs who run these events are always looking for Marshals to help out. There is also a wonderful social side to the Hillclimb family and there’s always something fun going on in the paddock in the evenings.

So if you want a front row seat to see some of the fastest cars in Ireland in action why not Marshal? You’ll make lots of new friends and the crack is only mighty. Visit Irish Hillclimb.com for more information about our sport. And to see some excellent Hillclimb Video visit Vantage Point Video.
